Just a footnote to apac 09. What a fabulous opportunity it was for all families affected by autism, and those working to help them, to come together and make connections, to share our learnings and to go home feeling inspired.
The AutismPro team enjoyed meeting all the people who came to our table, and discussing our service. Our poster presentation was warmly recieved and is partially reproduced below. AutismPro is a relatively young service, operating for just a short time in Australia, but we have already helped many families, and look forward to helping many more.
Qualitative feedback from the Smith family
Do you think AutismPro has built capacity and confidence with your family?
“Autism pro gave us the tools needed to gain full control of his (our son’s) program and really made us look at our home as the main source of education and preparation for the world. It helped us to consider many different styles of therapy treatment and methods and choose one that suited our son and us best.
We were able to devise a treatment plan that holistically incorporated all services we were receiving. I saw how autism pro aided as a ‘case manager’ and assisted with prioritising objectives with our ISP (Individual support plan) with the early intervention service.
In the time we have been using the autism pro program we have seen a dramatic boost of confidence and capacity for my son and I (mother).
Do you think the AutismPro Support Service has been valuable?
“I would not have understood the sheer depth of the program had it not been for the support service that went along with the program. The support person was an invaluable part of the program itself. I was given web links, reading material, practical help and support in general. She helped me navigate the program, confidently decide the best objectives for us and helped with deciding the best methods to use.
I could not have had the successes I have had with the program, without the support service. Although the program is computer software, the support service gave it a human edge that is vital”.
Do you think AutismPro is an effective intervention tool?
“It would be wonderful if all families with children with ASD had access to this program. It compliments all other services and really brings them together as a tangible and coordinated plan. It gives the families a sense of charge over the lives of their child. It is especially effective for those of us in rural or remote areas….”.
